amfori and COVID-19

At amfori, one of our central priorities is to ensure strong safety and social conditions for workers across global supply chains. The health crisis has had a profound disruptive impact on all our members, their producers and the workers from headquarters to factory floors and farms. Amidst this crisis, and how it continues to develop, our focus has been to continue to provide world-class services and advice to our members, allowing them to improve working conditions and respond sustainably to the pandemic.

Supporting and engaging amfori members

During the Pandemic, we have seen that fast, decisive action can be the key to success. In order to react quickly, amfori’s direction on the pandemic has been guided by the COVID-19 taskforce, an advisory committee created by the amfori Board of Directors. This committee has provided guidance for members to hold strong on their commitment to sustainability through the publication of our guidelines on Responsible Purchasing Practices. amfori has continued to monitor and provide key updates to our members through the amfori COVID-19 Updates Hub. In order to continue to offer top-class services to our members, amfori has adopted a resilience plan to weather any adverse economic effects following the COVID-19 outbreak. This resilience plan included notably a more focused strategy, a reduction of the budget and – as a last resort – the very difficult decision to separate paths from some teammates. The COVID-19 crisis forced us to re-assess our approach and it also made clear what is truly important for us as individuals and the world as a whole. We are thankful for everyone at amfori, staff and members, for your continuous support. More than ever, we remain committed to Trade with Purpose.

Working to Support our Stakeholders

amfori has been very engaged with key stakeholders to make sure sustainability remains at the forefront of open and sustainable trade. amfori joined a coalition of 10 organisations representing multi-stakeholder initiatives to call for stronger human rights protections during the outbreak. While it appears that some parts of the world may be emerging from the pandemic, slowly, it is important to continue to collaborate multilaterally. In light of this need, amfori signed the United Nations’ Statement from Business Leaders for Renewed Global Cooperation in September 2020 in advance of the UN 2020 General Assembly.
